Mr. Wash Presents Artists in Space

Artists in Space documents 20 studio visits where Mr. Wash sits down with friends and peers to explore how each artist has cultivated a personal space that nurtures their creative practice.
The artists refl ect a diverse group of Angeleno creatives, representing a range of cultural backgrounds, generations and disciplines that are shaping the city today: Mario Ayala, Charles Bibbs, Patrisse Cullors, Mel Depaz, Delfi n Finley, Kohshin Finley, Erin D. Garcia, Kenneth Gatewood, Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., Lanise Howard, Ozzie Juarez, Tidawhitney Lek, Tala Madani, Maria Maea, Michael Massenburg, Anthony Lee Pittman, Devin Reynolds, Gabriela Ruiz, Peter Shire, and Sonya Sombreuil.

All proceeds of Artists in Space will go toward building the Art By Wash Studio & Community Center, founded by Mr. Wash. Currently in its blueprint phase with support from Morphosis Architects and The NOW Institute, the center is projected to open in 2028 and will transform into a space for the Compton community, offering all-levels art classes and workshops, as well as creative residencies. It will also serve as a haven for individuals who developed their artistic practice during incarceration and are returning home from prison, offering housing and reintegration resources.

As a self-taught artist, Mr. Wash learned to paint in prison while serving a life sentence following a wrongful conviction. Granted clemency by President Obama, he returned to Compton dedicated to sharing art’s transformative power with his Los Angeles community.
