Monica Majoli: Blueboy (Pedro) Tote
Blueboy (Pedro) Tote is a limited-edition silkscreen on light blue denim by Monica Majoli for Made in LA 2020: a version. Blueboy (Pedro) is from a more extensive series of white line woodcuts drawn from erotic photographs by Alex Sanchez, founding art director of Blueboy magazine. Published from 1974 to 2007 by Donald N. Embinder, Blueboy was one of the first entertainment magazines for gay men in the US. The magazine was distributed nationally in supermarkets, drug stores, and on newsstands in urban cities and small towns, radically altering LGBTQ visibility. Majoli’s Blueboy series focuses on the mid to late ‘70s, the halcyon period of Gay Liberation before the devastation of the AIDS epidemic eclipsed queer self-determination.
