Politics of Rehearsal
was the first large-scale museum exhibition in the United States devoted to the career of Belgian-born, Mexico City-based artist Francis Alys. Alys is considered to be among the most important artists working today. The exhibition included works in a wide range of mediums, including painting, drawing, film, video, and photography, each telling visual stories, potent myths that can be told and re-told. The exhibition was organized by Russell Ferguson, Chair, Department of Art, University of California, Los Angeles, and Adjunct Curator, Hammer Museum. The catalogue includes a DVD of one of Alys's short works.

The Undiscovered Country

The exhibition began in the 1960s with paintings by Vija Celmins, Gerhard Richter, John Baldessari, and Neil Jenny, and advances to the present via work by Philip Guston, Thomas Lawson, Jochen Klein, and Luc Tuymans. About half the exhibition is devoted to recent work, including paintings by Silke Otto-Knapp, Enoc Perez, Kirsten Everberg, Richard Prince, and Thomas Eggerer. The exhibition was curated by former Chief Curator Russell Ferguson.
